Portugal, France fire in the hot sun

Many areas in Portugal and France are on alert for wildfires as temperatures can reach more than 40 degrees Celsius.

About 400 firefighters were deployed to battle forest fires in the Mafra area, about 40 kilometers north of the Portuguese capital Lisbon, on July 31. People tried to slow the spread of the fire by spraying water into their gardens. Paulo Santos, commander of the Civil Protection Agency, said a nursing home for 30 people was forced to evacuate.

Wildfires also raged in northern and central Portugal, prompting authorities to mobilize more than 1,000 firefighters. In Ourem, in the central part of the country, residents of a riverside mudflat had to be evacuated and two people were suffocated with smoke.

Areas in northern and central Portugal were put on alert over the weekend as temperatures are expected to rise sharply to more than 40 degrees Celsius and last until August 2. Meteorologists explain rising temperatures because of climate change, warning the situation could be more severe.

Portugal, a country where wildfires killed more than 100 people in 2017, in early July was also affected by a series of wildfires caused by heat. Since the beginning of this year, more than 58,000 hectares of forest have been burned, according to preliminary estimates by the Institute of Nature and Forest Conservation.

Meanwhile in France, forest fires broke out in the southeast on July 31, causing 350 hectares to be burned in the Gard, one firefighter was seriously injured, nearly 35 hectares in Marseille were affected, some roads had to be closed. door.

“Four firefighters were injured,” Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter about the fire that broke out in the pine forest in the town of Aubais, south of Nimes.

One seriously injured person had to be taken to the emergency room by helicopter for burns to his hands and face. Others suffered minor injuries after the wind turned the fire and spread it into the fire truck, said Eric Agrinier, the fire operation commander.
