Discovered asteroid rushing to Earth at a speed of 116,000 km / h

Asteroid 2022 OE2 with a diameter of 170 – 380 m is flying towards Earth with an expected closest distance of 5.15 million km.

2022 OE2, an asteroid several hundred meters in diameter, will fly close to Earth at 7:23 a.m. on August 4, according to data from NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). The closest distance between 2022 OE2 to Earth is 5.15 million km, about 13 times the average distance between Earth and the Moon, so there will be no collision.

Asteroids are chunks of rock orbiting the Sun, similar to planets but significantly smaller. Estimating the size of asteroids is difficult because astronomers often have to rely on their brightness in the sky.

“The larger the asteroid, the more light it will reflect and the brighter it will be. However, this requires assuming the degree of reflectivity of the constituent matter. Plus a number of other complicating factors, the size The actual size of an object can be far from the estimated value,” explains Greg Brown, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich (UK).

Due to many factors that cannot be precisely known, astronomers often publish range estimates, which in the case of 2022 OE2 are 170 – 380 m. According to CNEOS data, this asteroid will move at a staggering speed of 116,000 km/h.

2022 OE2 is one of more than 29,000 Near-Earth Objects, or NEOs, discovered to date, most of which are classified as asteroids. The term NEO refers to objects that fly within 48 million kilometers of the blue planet.

Scientists discovered 2022 OE2 on July 26, just days before it approached Earth. NEOs can be quite difficult to detect, in part because they are relatively small and dark compared to other objects in the sky.
